Evaluates books and project portfolios according to her/his area of genre or expertise, prepares evaluation reports, participates in publishing activities and carries out activities related to professional development.

 

Duties and responsibilities

1- Evaluates books and project portfolios and writers according to her/his area of genre or expertise

a- Inspects the portfolio or the book in accordance with the publishing house policy and related criteria.

– Reads and reviews the books or files in accordance with company policy.

– Identifies the value of a project regarding its subject, content, and genre.

– Evaluates according to the target audience.

– Evaluates according to language use, style, and narrative consistency.

– Evaluates the text regarding its distinctive features and authenticity.

– Evaluates sale potential.

– Compares similar or competing examples.

– Does research and evaluates different points of views on the subject if any.

b- Does research about writers’ publishing past, her/his knowledge and sufficiency on the subject he/she is working on, her/his success (including awards, sales numbers, media impact, etc.), critical acclaim of her/his words.

2- Prepares evaluation report about the book or the file

a- About the book or the file:

– Identifies its value regarding its subject, content, and genre,

– Identifies the target audience,

– Identifies text adequacy regarding language, style, and narration,

– Identifies the ideas, arguments, and points of view,

– Verifies dates and places,

– Expresses opinion on the sale potential, shelf-life, possible international publication opportunities, exporting to other mediums (cinema, television, theatre etc.) and highlights of writers’ publishing past or any other significant point if any be.

b- Presents her/his general evaluation on the book and opinion in its publication.

3- Makes suggestions about the book or the file

a- Recommends people for the publication process (translator, editor, photographer, designer, etc.) and methods.

b- Suggests possible timing for the publication, printing numbers, and print features

c- Makes suggestions on about the textual alterations.

d- Makes suggestions about possible publishing supporters (sponsors, funds, wholesale etc.).

e- Makes suggestions about sales and promotions.

4- Contributes to publishing house practices

a- Delivers the written report to the publishing house and presents it to the publishing commissions if need be.

b- Revises the report if need be.

c- Participates in the setting of the publishing program. Contributes to the publishing program with analysis and evaluation on the area of expertise.

d- Expresses general opinion on the publishing program.

5- Directs the publishing house by suggesting new fields, writers, and emerging trends

a- Points out new publishing areas and makes suggestions.

b- Observes and points out emerging trends in publication business.

c- Looks for writers to incorporate by considering the area of publishing house specialization.
